Doctor Strange

The third film I have watched for my Film Studies A-level is Doctor Strange.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Doctor Strange is a 2016 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics. The film revolves around Doctor Strange, an acclaimed neurosurgeon who seeks mystical healing after his hands are badly injured in a career ending car crash. However he ends up discovering the powers of other dimensions and trains to defeat threats that want to destroy the world.

I watched this film on my television through recording it. The positives of watching it like this are that I am able to watch it on a larger screen than my phone or laptop, whilst still being able to pause, play, rewind and adjust the volume to my liking. I another positive is that due to it being recorded and kept on my t.v, I am able to watch it whenever I want and multiple times without paying, unlike at the cinema or renting.

The negative was that I felt unable to get comfortably close enough to the t.v due to not being able to easily adjust its position and distance like I can with other devices. I also personally prefer to watch films with headphones and I feel that I can appreciate the audio better, yet with a t.v, I am unable to do this.

The two main conflicts of this film are the intertwined ideas of Human vs Supernatural and Human Vs Self. These two conflicts are linked together as the main character has to overcome a God-like creature and it's followers, yet in order to do this he also needs to overcome his hand injuries and the mental scars that they have left him. The basic plot of this film is also 'Overcoming the monster' as that is Doctor Strange's key aim in the movie, yet there is also an element of 'Rebirth' as he seems to become a better person through this process.

Overall I think I enjoyed watching the film on t.v screen due the large screen as I feel I was able to fully appreciate the advance 'Inception' like illusions achieved in this film through the intricate CGI. Yet I still personally prefer to watch a fairly long film like 'Doctor Strange' on a laptop so I can watch it comfortably in any position I like.
